GIZELLE NORWITCH

GMASH

“I’m a witch for hire, not a lock pick.” Gizelle smoothed a hand down the skirt of her white tuxedo jacket style mini dress. Long, blond hair hung in silky sheets down both sides of her oval face. The woman was beautiful if you could get past the frost in her pale blue eyes.

Prowder stood off to the side, watching silently as the witch and the director discussed the situation.

“What do you mean?” Draxley asked. “You bill yourself as the most powerful witch-for-hire in Florida. Something like this should be a walk in the rowan grove for you.”

“I don’t take walks,” she drawled. “And I am the most powerful natural witch in Florida. Possibly on the eastern seaboard now that Blackwell is dead. But this isn’t just about power. Watch.”

She held her hands over the sarcophagus and muttered an incantation. Black words swam hazily into view, floating in the air in four neat lines. She snapped her fingers at Prowder. “Paper, now.”

Hastily the half-gargoyle tore a sheet out of her notepad. The witch slipped it under the words and lifted gently, slowly. The lines of text settled onto the paper like ink.

Gizelle read them aloud. “Seal this casket from intrusion and protect it from harm. Those who would breach this ward, pain shall crush. By my voice alone, or love’s gentle charm, May the hallowed seal be broken, and life allowed to rush.” She held the paper out to Draxley, who backed up a step, shaking his head.

A sly grin crossed her face. “Nothing fancy or stylish, but it will hold. The witch who did this might have been in a hurry, but she was thorough. Notice that she’s spelled this so that only she or the person who loves this woman can lift the ward without killing themselves. And she wasn’t just using the ley line power naturally available to all witches.”

Draxley’s mouth sagged open. “What do you mean? What else could she be using?”

She turned her gaze back to the coffin, tilting her head to one side. “I don’t know. I’ve never seen energy quite that color before. Purple, lavender, yes, but not that shade. And the double strands of blue and purple? It’s almost as if there were two of her.”

“You’re talking nonsense,” Draxley said.

Her eyes narrowed as she swung to face him. “I’m telling you the truth. Believe it or don’t, I still get my consultation fee.” She returned to her study of the sarcophagus, circling it, her nose wrinkling as she examined it from multiple angles.

“What if we kill her,” Prowder blurted out. “Would that break the ward?”

Gizelle, currently bent over the top of the coffin for a closer look at the inlay there, tilted her head to look at the girl, eyes widening in appreciation. “A good thought, but no. At least, not if she’s killed somewhere else. Not even a ward breaker stone will help.”

“Why not? What makes this so special?” Draxley demanded.

Gizelle gave him a pitying look. “The magick used here is being constantly fed by the ley lines.
